The City of Houston Office of Emergency Management has launched an internship program aimed at helping bring up professional emergency managers from academic programs by immersing them in the day-to-day aspects of the profession. 

OEM interns play an active role in the way our agency plans for, and responds to emergencies in Houston. Our interns have gone on to work for Houston OEM, as well as agencies throughout the City, State and Nation.  

Internship Application Dates:

Fall 2016:  Applications Due Friday, August 26th, 2016

Spring 2017: Applications Due Friday, November 25th, 2016

Summer 2017: Applications Due Friday, March 31st, 2017

The City of Houston Office of Emergency Management (OEM) is seeking interns from among Houston’s best and brightest undergraduate and graduate university students to help build a more effective and inclusive emergency management program for the nation’s fourth-largest city. Internships are available in the following categories: EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT PLANNING & OPERATIONS Interns will conduct projects that substantially improve how Houston responds to disasters in the areas of mitigation, preparedness, response & recovery. PUBLIC & COMMUNITY RELATIONS Interns will work with public affairs officers to develop, implement and manage public relations and community engagement strategies across multiple mediums, including: email, web, social, community events, television and radio production. As this is an unpaid internship, interns MUST receive credit from their institution, and MUST be either: an active student in good standing with, or have graduated in the last 6 months from, an accredited college or university.
