City of Houston Emergency Management Launches Mobile Website
HOUSTON - The City of Houston Mayor's Office of Emergency Management has launched a new website that is optimized for use on a mobile phone with the goal of helping City residents prepare for, respond to, and stay informed during disasters.
"m.houstonoem.net" provides residents with information on the City's emergency response, as well as resources to help them build an emergency kit, develop an emergency plan, and stay informed during and after disasters all in an easy-to-use mobile format that can be viewed on an array of smartphones and tablets.
The mobile site was also designed to facilitate easy communication with residents during an emergency, allowing residents to receive incident updates directly from the Office of Emergency Management when emergencies occur in the City.
Recent east coast hurricanes such as Irene have demonstrated the usefulness and the importance for easily accessible emergency information even when electricity infrastructure is compromised. This site plays a key role in keeping information flowing from official sources to help residents respond to all types of emergencies.
"Our City is becoming more and more mobile, and now Houston residents can get important emergency preparedness and incident information right where they are," said Sharon Nalls, Houston's Emergency Management Coordinator, "Having this information at hand is a key part of what the City is doing to make sure that residents stay informed in emergencies."
Residents can also access mobile versions of the Office's social media outlets by visiting the new mobile site.
The City of Houston Office of Emergency Management is one of the first local emergency management agencies in the nation to offer emergency information through a version of a website optimized for mobile browsers.
Residents can visit m.houstonoem.net to view the new website.
